ETHAN Brouwer is racing for:
“Homelessness is tricky. There are nuances to each homeless persons' story but we are quick to categorize and often assume the worst. What do you do when you see a homeless person? Often my first reaction is to ignore them and try to avoid eye contact - which I'm not proud of.
The Lighthouse Mission does the opposite. Through their various programs, they seek the outcast, want to learn their story, and share Jesus' love for them. From the times I have helped served meals at the shelter, I can say that the staff cares about the people within their walls - whether they are there for one night or have been there for months or years. Not only do they give them shelter, food, and community, but they also share God's love for them.
The staff and volunteers at the Lighthouse Mission are being the hands and feet of Jesus for the marginalized and the outcast. Take a peak into their ministry, make a gift if you want, but at the end of the day, be kind to the homeless people you see. Say hi, have a 'goodie bag' in your car to give out, ask them about their story. Do what you can to make them feel seen and treated like a human, made in God's image.”
“I love training & it is foundational in my daily life. It is where I can process things, push myself, explore creation, & talk to God. However, it can be selfish as it takes away from time I can spend with others. The idea of being able to make an impact for an organization that I believe in while training for my next goal is exciting to me. It adds an additional level of motivation to keep going when training gets hard.”
